Know Who's Calling, and How They're Related
Your phone rings. The number isn't saved. FamRoot shows it's Margaret, your grandmother, your father's mother. Smart Caller ID is one of the things that becomes possible once your family relationships are connected.
Smart Caller ID works on Android only. It is part of the FamRoot Android app, which is launching shortly. For iPhone, we are evaluating it.

Your family tree, at the moment the phone rings.
Smart Caller ID uses the relationships already in your FamRoot network. The more of your family that joins, the more callers it can recognise.
Build your network
Add your relatives and invite them. Each person keeps their own details, including their phone number, up to date.
A relative calls
FamRoot shows the caller's name with their relationship to you: Margaret, "Grandmother". Grace, "Aunt". Or simply "Cousin's wife".
Tap to see the path
Not sure how a "cousin's wife" fits in? Tap to see the relationship path, step by step.
"Cousin's wife" is the answer. The path is the explanation.
Every family has relatives you'd recognise at a wedding but couldn't place on a phone call. Smart Caller ID shows the name and the relationship, and one tap shows how you're connected.
You, your father, his mother: that's your grandmother, at relationship level 2. The same works further out. Your mother's sister's son's wife is your cousin's wife, at level 5. Now you know who you're talking to before you say hello.
- Family and relatives in your network, up to seven relationship levels.
- Recent calls labelled by relationship, so you can see who called, and how they're related, at a glance.

Your calls stay on your phone.
A caller ID app sits close to some of the most personal data on your phone. Here is exactly what FamRoot does with it.
No call data leaves your device
Your call history, call times and durations stay on your phone.
Call logs aren't stored
We do not store your call logs on our servers.
Only your network is identified
Callers are identified from your family and relatives within your network, up to seven relationship levels.
Find the right person in your family.
The same connected network that powers Smart Caller ID lets you search your family. Look for the doctor in the family, the cousin who lives in the city you're visiting, or everyone at a particular relationship.
- By profession. Who in the family is a lawyer, an engineer, a teacher?
- By place. Relatives add a location by typing an address or pinning it on a map, and you can search by place or distance. Results are only as precise as the location each person enters.
- By relationship. Find your cousins, aunts or in-laws in one go.

Smart Caller ID questions
Does Smart Caller ID work on iPhone?
Not today. Smart Caller ID is Android only, and we are evaluating it for iOS.
How do I get Smart Caller ID?
Smart Caller ID is part of the FamRoot Android app, which is launching shortly. Sign up for free now and build your family tree on the web app, so your network is ready when the Android app arrives.
Does FamRoot upload my call history?
No. No call data leaves your device. Only phone numbers are sent to our server, to look up how the caller is related to you. Call logs are not stored on our servers.
Who will Smart Caller ID recognise?
Your family and relatives within your FamRoot network, up to seven relationship levels. It shows their name and their relationship to you, and you can tap to see the relationship path.
Will people outside my network see who I am when I call them?
Not today. We are planning an option where people outside your network may see your profile picture when you call them, only if you set your picture to public.
Which Android permissions does it need?
Three: access to your call log, permission to make and manage phone calls, and permission to display over other apps (so the caller card can appear on the incoming call screen). You can turn any of them off in your phone's settings, and Caller ID stops working.
How precise is location in family search?
Only as precise as the location each person enters. A location can be a typed address or a pin on a map. Address visibility settings are planned.
Is Smart Caller ID free?
Yes. FamRoot is completely free today, with all features included. If paid subscriptions are introduced in future, we will give reasonable notice, and nobody is charged without agreeing.
